El sismo de magnitud 6,4 que sacudió este martes la costa sur de la isla es probablemente el más dañino en más de un siglo

El terremoto de 1918

En 1918, un fuerte terremoto sacudió a Puerto Rico y causó un tsunami que resultó en 116 muertes y pérdidas económicas de 4 millones de dólares, dos veces el presupuesto anual para toda la isla, en ese momento según la Red Sísmica de Puerto Rico.

Las estimaciones del Servicio Geológico de Estados Unidos (USGS) muestran pérdidas económicas potenciales mayores a 100 millones de dólares por el terremoto de 6,4 de este martes.

Se sintió con intensidad

USGS también estima que más de 400.000 personas sintieron fuertes o muy fuertes temblores.

El terremoto de este martes es el más grande en impactar a Puerto Rico desde 2014 cuando un sismo de magnitud 6,4 se produjo a 98 kilómetros al noreste de Puerto Rico. Este terremoto interrumpió brevemente la electricidad y causó daños menores a Puerto Rico, ya que se encontraba más lejos de la costa que el terremoto de este martes.
