El presidente de El Salvador, Salvador Sánchez Cerén, anunció la ruptura de las relaciones entre su país y Taiwán y restableció las relaciones diplomáticas con China. El canciller de China, Wang Yi, dijo que las relaciones restablecidas son un nuevo hito en la historia entre las dos naciones. Taiwán suspendió los programas de ayuda en El Salvador y aseguran que retirarán sus equipos diplomáticos y técnicos. El senador Marco Rubio advirtió a El Salvador que debido a esta decisión comenzará a trabajar para que EE.UU. deje de mandar ayuda al país.
