Mario González is the anchor of CNN en Español’s primetime newscast dedicated to Mexico, CNN México: Perspectivas, and the weekly multiplatform show of the network, Mexico Opina. He is also the anchor for Cruzando Fronteras on CNN Latino. He is based in Mexico City.
Before joining CNN en Español, González worked for four years as the main anchor and news director of Channel 11’s morning newscast in Mexico. He was also anchor and news director of newscasts belonging to Prisa and Televisa radio, and has participated as an anchor of the prime time newscast Hoy por Hoy, and served as a correspondent for Televisa.
González has interviewed an array of high-profile Mexican politicians including: Enrique Peña Nieto, Mexico’s current president, the former Mexican presidents Felipe Calderón and Vicente Fox, former presidential candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Cuauhtemoc Cardenas, former Ecuadorian presidents Abdala Bucaram and Jamil Muhuad, former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori, and former Chilean president Patricio Alywin, former President of Chile, as well as prominent businessmen globally, and tycoon Carlos Slim, the CEO of Renault and Nissan, Carlos Gohsn, the CEO of Coca Cola, Muthar Kent, among many others.
In addition, González has a significant journalistic background outside of Mexico. In Ecuador he worked for six years as a correspondent director for the Inter Press Service (IPS) and as a founding producer of a Teleamazonas documentary series. He anchored investigative reports from Colombia, Venezuela, Chile, Peru, and Bolivia before launching the Teleamazonas program Día a Día, which received various international accolades including the prestigious Premio Rey de España. He has also covered the political process in the United States and the Israeli-Arab conflict.
A native of Mexico City, González holds a Bachelors Degree from Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana in Mexico City and a Masters Degree in Investigative Journalism from Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar in Ecuador. In addition, Gonzalez took courses in dramaturgy, scene directing and cotemporary theater. He is fluent in English and Spanish.
