MADRID, SPAIN - JULY 18: A digital thermometer reads 41 degrees Celsius on a very hot afternoon on July 18, 2023 in Madrid, Spain. An area of high pressure, named Cerberus after the underworld monster from Dante's Inferno, is making its way across the country, leading 13 of the 17 autonomous communities to be categorized as either extreme risk (red alert), significant risk (orange alert) or (yellow alert), with some places recording temperatures of 43C. With an ongoing drought and heatwave credited to climate change, extreme weather has already affected people in Spain, WHO reported in 2022 more than 4,000 excess deaths due to heat stress.
